CALVARY CHAPEL MERIDIAN

Paul the Tentmaker in Corinth

Today in Calvary Kids, we are going to see God not just work through Paul but through the other people we will meet in this chapter. God wants to work through you just as much as He did with Paul and these other individuals. Do you believe He can use you to do amazing things?

Read Acts 18

Paul met some new people on this new journey and was able to start working to pay for his travels. He met a couple named Priscilla and Aquilla and stayed with them, working side by side with them to make tents. Then, on Sabbath days (what we do on Sundays) he would go and talk to people.  So most of the week he would work, then spend his time teaching people about Jesus. Maybe this is what some of your own parents do as well; they work most of the week, then spend some time helping out at the church.

Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia and met up with Paul again in Corinth. It’s always a good thing to meet up with other friends that believe in Jesus and be able to have that in common! Paul once again spoke to the Jewish people about Jesus. Unfortunately, some did not want to hear it and they insulted Paul. It says Paul shook the dust off his clothes. This saying meant that because the people in that area rejected Jesus, that you would take nothing from them not even the dust on your own shoes.

Paul decided to not let it get to him and ended up speaking the gospel to Gentiles (those who were not Jewish). He left and went to Titus Justus’ house and all the people in the house believed in God. Many started to believe in Jesus although Corinth was a very pagan city. It was a very worldly place, like Las Vegas is today with people who decide to do bad things. But Paul had a vision. God told him to not be afraid and continue talking to these people. God said that He was with Paul and that God would keep him safe.

Paul ended up staying there for a year and a half! God encouraged Paul to keep going even in the midst of things being hard. Sometimes it feels like it would be the best thing to give up, but God wants us to press into Him in our weakness, because it is only by Him we can be made strong.

After a year and a half, Gallio became the governor and people began to create drama again and the Jews wanted to protest against Paul. The governor said that the Jews had to figure it out on their own. They didn’t get what they want wanted, and instead beat up another man named Sosthenes and Gallio did nothing about it.

Paul and them travelled to Ephesus and other cities and continued to preach the Gospel. One person we meet in this story was Apollos. He was boldly teaching others about Jesus and knew the scriptures accurately. He had such enthusiasm about Christ but only knew about John's Baptism. Two other people, Aquilla and Priscilla ended up taking this man aside and explaining the way of God to him even more accurately because he was missing the whole part of Christ actually being the Messiah. He was encouraged to continue on from there and proved to be a great benefit to those around him and sharing the gospel with the Jews about why Christ was the Messiah.

Do you have friends in your life who are willing to take you aside and teach you more about the Bible about something maybe you didn't know? Do you search the Bible to know the answers to be able to give to other people? These people were so excited to share the good news with others and we should be too!

Discussion Time:
1. Is sharing Jesus easy or hard for you?

2. What can you tell me about Jesus?

3. What was Paul’s job?

4. Have you ever helped a friend before?

Memory Verse:
"When he arrived there, he proved to be of great benefit to those who, by God’s
grace, had believed."
(Part of verse) Acts 18:27
