Paul and Barnabas’ Mission Starts
Today in Calvary Kids, we see how Paul (who is still called Saul at this point) is called out on a mission with Barnabas to share the gospel. We are going to see them travel to a few different places on their journey and see what God does through them.
Read Acts 13
While the believers were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit set apart Paul and Barnabas to go out on a journey. The other believers in the room laid hands on them and prayed for them before they would start this journey. This is a great thing to remember when we have friends around us that are called by the Lord to do something. Always take the time to pray for each other!
We immediately get to see that they first went to a Jewish synagogue in Seleucia. They continued to go place to place proclaiming Jesus to others. When they came to Paphos, they met a sorcerer named Bar-Jesus. A sorcerer is someone who practices magic and has special powers. This was something that God does not approve of because this man was talking to bad spirits.
This man tried to stop the governor from believing the truth about Jesus, but because of the boldness God gave to Barnabas and Paul, the governor ended up believing. The governor saw God’s power at work before him, a greater power in God than in the magician.
As they moved on, they taught a sermon at another synagogue, giving a word of exhortation to the people there. They reminded everyone listening of what God had done since the beginning, up until Jesus went to the cross for our sins. They wanted them to see and understand that Jesus was the Messiah.
Paul and Barnabas drew a big crowd and the local Jews were jealous and spread a lot of lies. This did not stop the people from believing and being saved though! Many people came to Christ that day! Their mission showed that they were spreading the good news of Jesus Christ not just to the Jews, but also the Gentiles. (This is what Peter's vision a few weeks back was all about! That Jesus not only came for the Jews, but the Gentiles as well).
Even with people coming to Christ, there were still Jewish leaders that were very upset and they stirred up persecution among the people towards Paul and Barnabas. They were expelled from the region but they shook the dust off their feet and still continued in joy! Sometimes it can be hard to have joy when others persecute us, but trust God that He is doing a work even when we may not get to see the full magnitude of it.
God calls each one of us to minister to those around us. Who do you need to talk to today about Jesus? Be bold in it and go out in joy in knowing that Jesus has you no matter what!
Family Discussion:
1. Who went out on a missionary journey?
2. Where can we go to spread the good news?
3. What are ways we can show Jesus in our lives without even saying a word?
4. What is your favorite part about church?
5. What friend could you invite to church with you next week?
Memory Verse:
"And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit." Acts 13:52
