CALVARY CHAPEL MERIDIAN

Our Savior on the Cross

JESUS LOVES YOU!

This week in Calvary Kids, we taught on Jesus dying on the cross for our sins. Jesus loves us so much that He died on the cross for our sins and we have been fully forgiven because of who He is and nothing of what we have done.

Read Luke 23:32-43

Going to the cross was not easy! Even though Jesus is God, He was still a man who felt pain. Jesus wasn’t alone on mount Calvary; there were two other men who committed crimes that were also on their own crosses next to Jesus. In other parts of the gospels, it describes these men as mocking and reviling Jesus like the Pharisees and soldiers were.

While Jesus was already taking on the sins of the world, He had people all around Him that hated on Him. How would you respond if you were in this situation? Instead of having anger or frustration towards them, Jesus was broken and asked the Father in verse 34 of this passage, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” Sometimes the best thing we can do is to pray for those who persecute you. Jesus loved them unconditionally, even while they were mean and unfair to a man who was completely innocent. Sometimes it can be extremely hard to have others treat you unfairly, but when we respond in love and kindness, it changes things.

Now here’s something interesting that happens. As a little more time goes on, one of the thieves starts to change his heart towards Jesus. The robber sees how Jesus was so loving and realizes who He really was. This is why it’s so important to love people because love can change a heart. Starting in verse 40, we see one of the thieves hanging
next to Jesus admit he was wrong, call Jesus Lord, and believe He is God. This is the process of being saved.

In order to be saved, you have to first admit you have sin and understand your need for a savior. And if we become saved, we get to be with Him in paradise forever!

This passage truly shows the heart of our Savior and the true LOVE that He has for each one of us even when we sin. If you have not asked the Lord into your heart yet, now is the time!

Family Discussion:
1. If a thief changed his heart towards Jesus can anyone also change their hearts?

2. What did the two hanging on the cross do to get punished?

3. What would you have said to Jesus on the cross if you were one of the thieves?

4. . What do you think heaven is going to be like?

Memory Verse:
Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”  And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise."
Luke 23:43
