Anointing Jesus' Feet
Through the Gospel Series- Jesus is Worthy of All Honor
Today in Calvary Kids, we learned about two different people; A sinner who poured out her only costly oil she had over Jesus' feet, weeping, kissing and cleaning them, and a Pharisee who could not see beyond the law and his own pride. Regardless of where your heart is right now, Jesus is worthy of all honor in our lives.
Luke 7:36-50
Imagine Jesus walking into a dinner party at a Pharisee's house, one who most likely wants to test Him. Back then it was custom to wash your feet when coming into another person's home because of how dirty their feet would get in sandals. When Jesus arrived, Simon the Pharisee did not even do this for Him.
Now imagine you are at this dinner party and a woman comes up to Jesus and starts cleaning Jesus' feet with her precious alabaster jar of oil and is weeping at His feet, all the while wiping them off with her own hair! Then she proceeds to apply a beautiful fragrant oil to Jesus' feet once they were clean. How would you respond to this? Would it be a shock to watch someone do this? What would you say to Jesus or to this woman?
Simon, the Pharisee, could not believe that Jesus was letting a sinner wash His feet in this way. He was looking at her for all the wrong things she had ever done in the past and her reputation, but Jesus was looking at her and seeing her for all that she could be. He proceeded to give Simon a scenario about two debtors that owed money to their creditor. That creditor, seeing that neither of them had anything to give, forgave both of them their debt. Jesus' question: "Which of them will love him more?" Simon answered that it would be the one who had the bigger debt. And so He brought the conversation full circle to the woman who had loved much and said that her sins were forgiven.
Jesus sees you! Even though we mess up and do things we shouldn't at times, we can come to Jesus and ask Him for forgiveness in complete humility. He is faithful and just to forgive us in all of our sins. The woman who came to Jesus knew that He was worthy of all Honor and Praise. She knew that He could do for her what no one else could...set her free from her sins. Are you the Pharisee in this story or the woman?
Family Discussion:
1. What does forgiveness mean?
2. How would it feel if someone forgave you of something big in your mind?
3. Why is it important not to judge others by what they look like on the outside?
4. Do you know that you are truly loved by Christ, or do you feel like you are not good enough to be forgiven?
5. In what ways can you honor Christ today?
Memory Verse
"Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head." Luke 7:44
