Jesus Turns Water Into Wine

Jesus is the Joy of our Salvation

Read John 2:1-12

Whenever there is a celebration or party, the host does not want to run out of food or drink. A host always wants there to be plenty for everyone. Jesus was attending a wedding in Cana and Mary, Jesus' mother, noticed that there was no more wine. She went straight to Jesus, knowing he could fix the problem as God's promised one. He affectionately tells her this was not the place to reveal who He was. He would still produce new wine, but it would be done quietly without revealing who He was.

Mary quietly and confidently pointed the servants to her beloved Son and said, "Do what He tells you." She submitted to Him. She did not try to give the servants a list of Jesus' qualifications. When Jesus tells us to do something, we only need to obey. He always knows what He is doing. When Jesus told the servants to fill the vessels with water, did they fill them halfway?  No, they filled them to the brim. They may not have understood what Jesus was doing, but they obeyed Him and got to be used by Jesus to bring joy to others.

It is His desire that our lives overflow with His joy. Joy is one evidence of the fruit of His Spirit in our lives. Joy is better than happiness.  Happiness comes and goes depending on what is happening around us. If things in our life are all good, we feel happy. Joy is different and is far better. It is the fruit of the Spirit that abides deep inside our hearts because we have Jesus there. Even bad circumstances cannot destroy the rich, deep joy of the Lord in our hearts and lives.  Jesus is the joy of our salvation.
